    Audio Host/Producer (2 positions)



    Job Introduction:

    The Toronto Star is looking for experienced audio hosts and producers for two vacancies in the digital department of the Star newsroom. This small, dedicated team – with the addition of one audio/video editor – will collaborate to create frequent, engaging, premium audio episodes that include sources from inside the Star as well as original reporting. 

    Host/producers will have on air duties interviewing guests on a wide range of topics, as well as producing episodes; including pitching topics; and finding, booking and pre-interviewing internal and external guests. The host/producers are natural interviewers who can discuss many issues with exceptional storytelling capabilities, and who can help find original and insightful ways to expand on Star journalism through audio. Host/producers will interview guests on air, as well as conduct research, pitch ideas, select topics, coordinate guests, write copy, and other basic duties associated with chase producing.



    • Develop and produce audio content, including researching and brainstorming daily discussion topics, and booking and pre-interviewing guests
    • Be involved in all aspects of audio creation: scripting and storyboarding, crewing and scheduling, recording, and sometimes editing
    • Develop, plan, and schedule audio production, including interviews, behind-the-scenes material, original content
    • Interview guests from inside and outside the newsroom with facility on a wide range of topics, to produce organic and engaging audio content
    • Produce finished audio in adherence with the Toronto Star’s quality, editorial, and ethical standards in a timely manner
    • Lead and/or facilitate content brainstorm sessions and pitch creative suggestions for audio content with newsroom leaders, journalists, and digital producers
    • Continually improve and broaden digital audio/video skills and awareness of the latest tools and technologies



    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in journalism or equivalent experience
    • Experience reporting, chase producing, and being on air in audio and/or video
    • Experience in producing relevant and engaging audio content
    • Interest in contributing to an organization that strives to make a real difference in the community
    • Natural interviewing skills, comfort with having conversations with experts live on a wide range of topics, and the ability to ask thought-provoking questions in real time
    • Exceptional storytelling capabilities, particularly as they translate to audio/video
    • Conversant in digital publishing technologies to effectively communicate with journalists
    • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects proactively
    • Conversant in digital publishing technologies to effectively communicate with journalists
    • Exceptional editorial background and news judgment
    • Experience as a working journalist, reporting, chase producing and/or on-air broadcasting
    • Ability to work outside normal work hours as needed
